Jude Kelly
As founder of Metal, Jude Kelly built the principles of Metal’s philosophy based on the recognition of a desire to locate a greater freedom of creative expression within herself, outside of the safety net provided by an institution, and to be given an opportunity to experiment, reflect and further challenge her practice as the author of works of art and to take new risks.
During the course of the year, Jude has been mapping her personal journey of the creation of Metal – her ‘work in progress’ – through the creation of a one-woman live performance / installation work entitled The Fear of the Artist which explores the very edges of the personal and creative risk involved in a major change of direction for an artist of her experience.
The work will also inform a lecture tour in the autumn of 2004 at six venues across Britain collating her investigation into the nature of fear, risk and control. She will speak about the uneasy relationship between culture and instrumentalism in public policy, and argue for the right of artists and the creative process to reclaim a central space in society. The lectures will also embrace the notion that creative, social, and personal journeys are all part of the same continuum.
The Fear of the Artist Lecture is at the National Theatre, London (020 7452 3000) on November 2003.
