Metal Liverpool

Having developed a number of creative relationships and conversations in and around Liverpool, through the development of the King Cotton story, and a growing relationship with the Liverpool Biennial and the 2008 City of Culture plans, Metal were introduced to an area in Liverpool called Kensington.  Kensington has been a neglected ward of Liverpool and suffered more than most areas of the City from the mass population exodus of the 70's and 80's.

The potential for real and lasting change is in the offing however. One of the most ambitious housing renewal projects ever undertaken in the UK is now gradually getting underway, led by Kensington Regeneration, and the housing association, Community Seven.

Community Seven invited Metal to occupy one of their empty properties in Kensington - a three story Georgian terrace house to provide a north west ‘home’ for Metal’s artistic activities and investigations with an added focus on how Metal and its associated artists can contribute to rebuilding the social and economic health of the area through arts-led social inclusion and educational projects.

Over the last six months, we have been building and strengthening our relationships and networks in the area with both the artistic community of Liverpool and Manchester, as well as the local community in and around Kensington, whilst putting together a programme of activities to happen in the house which will be ready for occupation in October 2004.

Metal believes that building up a critical mass of creative activity in the immediate neighbourhood, will have an eventual impact on the opportunities, aspirations and possibilities for Kensington as a growing, vibrant community.  It is an opportunity to put into practice some of the thinking and investigation into culture-led regeneration that Metal has been involved in over the last year.

AGA have extended their support of Metal with a second AGA oven for the Liverpool Metal House.
