Unilever PLC – Creative Courage
Every year Unilever hold an awards ceremony for the top creative executives from their offices around the world. Countries take turns to host, and in 2003 the event came to London.
Metal was commissioned with the artist, Helen Storey to create a challenging and rewarding day for the 150 visiting executives that would take them on a journey of self discovery into their own Creative Courage.
The large, semi-derelict Bargehouse on the River Thames was transformed into a collection of interactive visual art installations, cabaret, cinema, live performance and workshop space with artists creating a continuous dialogue and investigation into where and how Creative Courage is located within someone, and harnessed and extended into working practices. A 3D sound work created by Illustrious, and inspirational quotes throughout the stairwells and corridors created an atmosphere of drama and journey throughout the whole building.
Metal used the opportunity, and a portion of our fee, to invest in further investigation into the idea of Creative Courage with a series of films entitled Creative Journeys. The Unilever project gave us the opportunity to pilot six short films with leading artists talking in a candid and open manner about artistic fear, and courage. Metal has since been developing this idea as a separate project. Further information about this is under the heading ‘Metal Generated Ideas to Investigate Further: Creative Journeys’.
“Thank you for an inspiring day. Your quest to drive risk and creativity will without doubt, provide rich returns. The inspiration I personally felt from watching Francesca, the comedian, is something that will always be in the forefront of my mind.” John Dooner, McCann-Erickson (part of Unilever Group)
