Their remarkable ability to re-create all manner of sounds, including complex hip hop, trance, drum n bass and garage beats, regularly wows audiences around the globe. Working with Icelandic superstar Bjork has put Shlomo firmly on the map for international stardom. He features on Oceania, the Grammy-nominated tune that appears on her all-vocal album. The day after Village Green in Southend, he is performing at Wembley Arena as part of the Olympic Changeover Ceremony.
Ku Da Mix

Welcome to the UK’s most exciting live global music ensemble!
Through new compositions and unique orchestrations, conventional instruments meet the less-familiar. Featuring 18 diverse musicians, they include Indian tabla, Armenian duduk, Syrian qanun, Flamenco guitar, Chinese erhu, French horn & Paraguayan harp. The orchestra (and its name) is the birthchild of a unique collaboration in global music composition and instrumentation by composers Kuljit Bhamra and David White.
David White (piano): One of the UK's leading musical directors, with beginnings on Broadway and a portfolio including Les Miserables, Sunset Boulevard and Porgy & Bess. He has guided many stars including Elaine Paige, Martine McCutcheon, Petula Clark and Alex Jennings.
Kuljit Bhamra (Indian tabla): Perhaps the most influential composer and record producer of British Asian music, his portfolio in film and theatre includes Bhaji on the Beach, The Far Pavillions, and Alexander, and as a musician in the hit musical Bombay Dreams.
Dave Randall and guests
Local boy Dave Randall (guitarist with Faithless/ Dido/ 1 Giant Leap) will showcase his new band at Village Green within earshot of the house where he grew up. In 2002 he brought together Iceland's Emiliana Torrini, West Africa's Maezah, England's Kirsty Hawkshaw, the urban poems of AD, the drums of Max Roach, the voice of Charlie Chaplin and the words of Woody Guthrie. Entitled 'nommo', Slovo's debut album raised questions about the world and was in the words of The Sunday Times, 'a wonderful album that is both stridently polemical and determinedly celebratory.'
Little Dog
A 3 piece Roots, Dub and Ska outfit from Southend on Sea. Irrepressible grooves and instant vocal hooks make this live band an event to remember every time they play. Phrases, lyrics and grooves, spontaneously thrown into original tracks from classic acts like Bob Marley, Dillinger, Ian Dury and George Clinton, give every audience something they recognised immediately and cannot resist. Band members have played as session musicians with Bad Manners, The Specials, Bushfire, Dido and Skinny.
Three Beards
Folk / Acoustic / Experimental sounds, with influences that include, marching bands, Klezmer, Russian dance, barn dance, Vann Tierson, night on earth, morris dancing, Hungarian folk radio, dead rat orchestra, once upon a time in the West, Kraftwerk, Tom Waits, Madame Kaplinskas shoes……..As seen on MTV.
Rachel Lichtenstein
A visual artist, writer and oral historian. Best known for her book (and personal quest), Rodinsky’s Room (1999), a compelling psycho-geographical tour co-written with author Iain Sinclair, and her recent On Brick Lane(2007), an unforgettable journey through the vanished past, the disappearing present and the emerging future of Britain's most mythologized and misunderstood street. Rachel will be collecting visual and oral memories from visitors about Chalkwell Hall.
Impropera
Impropera create opera with an anarchic irreverent edge. Imagine the passion of opera with the adrenalin of improvisation – on the spot from the audience’s suggestions, without score, script or safety net. Their appearance at Village Green follows hugely successful performance at Soho Theatre and Edinburgh Fringe.
Led by David Pearl, who made his ROH debut aged 9 with Placido Domingo in 1970, the Impropera Company also features Comedy Store regular Niall Ashdown, sensitively powerful soprano Morag McLaren, powerfully sensitive soprano Susan Bisatt, clarinettist Peter Furniss, musical director Anthony Ingle on piano and, for the Edinburgh 2007 shows, guest artists Andy Morton and Louise Crane.
Level 4 - Bingo Poetry
Level 4 is the new magazine that seeks to promote arts and culture in and around Southend on Sea as the nexus for the different cultural threads that exist in our town and county. Level 4 promotes all forms of art (high, low, pop, pub, sub etc) that exist locally and nationally. For Village Green they will create a game of Poetry Bingo that will see participants shouting out words in rhyme at the top of their voices for traditional Bingo prizes.
Thadian Pillai
Trained in landscape, Thadian Pillai's practice is very much context-led. It involves fine art painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, the design of landscapes and gardens, and the engagement of these disciplines with a range of communities and private clients. Thadian will be inviting visitors to Village Green to help him construct a huge, tetrahedral construction / sculpture over the course of the day.
Park View Suites
Keeping the carbon footprint of Village Green to a minimum, food will be locally sourced and very locally prepared. Park View Suites, the function rooms situated within Chalkwell Park, will be providing all the hot and cold food at the event.
Cricket
The final match of the John Jarvis Trophy will be played out on the Cricket Field at Village Green from 1pm – 6pm. By the end of the day, this year’s winner of the annual, local friendly will be decided.
Magnificent Revolution
Creating power through cycling. Apart from the fact that it’s a lot of fun, the pedal powered system stimulates thought and discussion about energy consumption, its links to global warming and the need for development of lifestyle alternatives. Magnificent Revolution will be powering various environmentally-friendly installations, and demonstrating the amount of energy it takes to make toast, boil a kettle, and other daily domestic activities.
IDEA13
Village Green will also see the launch of IDEA13 the new Borough-wide network for Southend on Sea, instigated by the practising artists and arts organisations in the Borough and supported by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. Artists and makers of the borough will come together to form a bustling marketplace of arts and crafts, ideas, participatory workshops, exhibitions, and more than a few surprising interventions.
