Chalkwell Park – FREE ENTRY TO ALL EVENTS
A fantastic day of 'creative chaos and gentle anarchy' to celebrate the summer holidays. School’s Out!
Events on the day included:
Time Won’t Wait present Red Herring’s That’s The Way To Do It!
Shows start: 1pm, 2.30pm and 4.30pm on the green outside Chalkwell Hall
What would happen if Punch and Judy broke free of their booth? Havoc on the high street? Social unrest? Mass rebellion? And the rest! That’s The Way To Do It! is a raucous outdoor comedy for all the family – an alternative take on an age old institution that sees our lovable rogues run amok in these anxious, credit- crunched times. Part walkabout, part performance, part installation, there’s ample opportunity for us law-abiding folk to join the cavalcade, engaging in suitable acts of stupidity. Brought to you by a dream team of outdoor theatre-makers – this playful, knockabout satire is underpinned by timely concerns on ethical behaviour and censorship.
Banyan Theatre Company present: Thumbelina
Suitable for children aged 2-6 and their families. Shows start: 12pm and 1.45pm in Solomon Monk’s Pumphouse (marquee)
There was once a girl so small that she could float on a lilly pad and ride on the back of a dragon fly… Thumbelina’s adventures with a frog, mouse, mole and swallow are played out amongst gardening tools leading her to ultimate happiness in the kingdom of the flowers.
‘A Gem’ - The Times / ‘This is a magical Production full of delight and excitement’ - Animations Magazine
Paper Cinema present The Rock Charmer
Workshop: 2.30-4pm
Show: 5.15pm Solomon Monk’s Pumphouse (marquee)
The Paper Cinema is an illustrated song, a shadow, a smoke, a mirror, a puppet show, a cinema show, side show, magic show, a show and tale, a show off. It exists in the meeting of live music and moving drawings. What happens at the accidental meeting of
inkblots, photocopies, cardboard, angle-poise lamps, the occasional table, video technology, a laptop and a banana box?
Best to see The Paper Cinema with your own eyes…
Juneau Projects
Show: 4pm Solomon Monk’s Pumphouse (marquee)
No one's quite sure how to describe Juneau Projects, the brainchild of Ben Sadler and Phil Duckworth. Their work so far has featured singing cub scouts, and drowning Sony Walkmen... Are Juneau Projects a band who make art, or are they artists who are also a band? When they plant shrubs inside PCs, are they destroying technology or suggesting a new purpose for it? Are they meant to be funny or deadly serious? Or both? That seems to be the way they prefer it – every new Juneau project is like a mystical quest.
Children’s Films
Show: 11-12am
Remember ‘Saturday morning pictures’? The magic of cinema suitable for all ages.
School of Laughs Showcase
Show: 12.45pm
The next generation of stand-up comics take to the stage…
Arts Republic – Molly Fletcher & Tom Wilkinson
All day workshop
Arts Republic is a public art group specializing in art and science. Their kinetic (moving) sculpture is powered by the wind, water and even pedal power and they use recycled materials like plastic bottles. Being light, tough and waterproof, fizzy drinks bottles are perfect for wind sculpture. What amazing things they are, they last for years and yet we use them once for a quick swig and then throw them away. With your help, this sculpture will grow and grow throughout the day!
Artist Crazy Golf Range
All day – main sports field
An 8-hole golf range - each hole designed and built by different artists using a 'crazy DIY' approach and with scrap/reclaimed materials. A great game and artwork for both participant and spectator – this will be unlike any other golf course you’ve ever played! Playful and mischievous, some holes will allow you to ‘sabotage’ your opponent, some holes will obstruct your play with inaccessible structures... and some will just play with your mind... crazy!
The Curve – Jane Woollatt
A contemporary sculptural twist on the traditional 'Aunt Sally' seaside attraction.
This is an interactive ‘drawing wall’ where participants physically interact by inserting their head/arm/hand/leg/foot through holes in the chalkboard wall and prompting others to make a clever imaginative chalk drawing incorporating the body! A fantastic photo opportunity and sure to raise some laughs! A fascinating combination of 'the real' and the 'illusory', the drawings will change throughout the day – wipe the wall clean and start a new one..
Protest Placard Making Workshop
Just what is it you want to shout about? Got something to say? Make a funky placard no one can ignore and really make a statement! Organise a 'march' or a 'sit-in', or just set your placard in a prominent position and let everyone know about what you have to say...
Instant Exhibitions in Southend’s Turbine Hall
The artists at TAP, the old waterworks in Southend, have constructed a scale replica of their main gallery, the 'Winch Room' inside a beach hut... we invite children to make miniature artworks and 'curate' their own shows which will change during the course of the day. A fantastic opportunity to create your own 'major retrospective' or collaborate with others – all materials will be provided. All you need is your imagination and a bit of an 'inflated artist’s ego' to make your show happen – a brilliant photo-opportunity as whatever you put into this 'gallery' will look like the real thing... move over Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin, there are some new artists in town...
One Day Coincidence by Laurence Payot
Imagine... an organic performance infiltrating the park, something simple for everybody to join in, to create a bit of a magic. A subtle 'performance' that happens throughout the day, naturally. A 'performance' that will take its own unexpected form... children might start to do it together, and it's also a nice freeing action that makes you lose your senses and gives you a buzz, a feeling of dizziness... A park is the perfect setting for this to happen, with open sky, trees all around and a soft grassy floor to fall onto!
I LIKE YOU by Hayley Goodsell
With technology being so intertwined within our day-to-day lives, online social networking has become a platform for maintaining our personal relationships, using them for public declarations of every thought and feeling we have. We are more likely to send a friend or loved one a 'wall post' on Facebook or send a text message to tell them how we feel. Drawing inspiration from previous modes of public declaration such as sky writing and public handmade banners, you are invited to make a banner for someone you like.
Once created, the banners will be hung in various locations around the park, creating a public declaration, a handmade 'status update'.
Alternative School Sports Day
A creative twist on traditional games and sports... what if the running track does not run straight but takes you all over the place? What exactly is the 'Slug Race'? Have you ever played Musical Flares? What about racing around in 'box cars' like Super Mario?
