Showflat

SHOWFLAT in Southend saw seven artists create new work to install in their homes throughout October – December 2010.

Showflat was developed by visual artist Mario Borza through a residency at Metal in Southend on Sea. Initially the idea was a practical response to the reality of the highly competitive gallery-world where gallery space and the possibility of exhibition are granted only to the few. Following a successful run in 2009, SHOWFLAT has emerged as an intimate experience of viewing the artists work and life as one. It challenges the relationship between public and private for both artist and viewer as the artist presents their work in a very personal space and invites an interested public in.

The concept of Showflat is finding support from a growing number of artists as a statement of empowerment which bypasses the conventional art career process as well as presenting an interesting set of issues and vulnerabilities around combining private and public lives. As Mario explains, 'To exhibit in your own home shows warmth and acceptance of whom you are with no fear. It's a simple idea that for a short time puts galleries and institutions to one side and allows the artist to try out new ideas, show work and gain really valuable experience and audience feedback without waiting for permission.'

A limited edition publication was launched in November 2011. It's hand-finished, numbered and signed by all participating artists. To order a copy, contact Metal on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 01702 470700.
