Stacey Spiegel

Stacey Spiegel is an internationally renowned artist currently focusing on large-scale advanced new media experiences.  

Spiegel has been creating unique experiences for cultural and educational institutions, including cultural and visitor centers, art museums, science centers, and natural history museums since 1996. His selected clients have included: The Smithsonian Institution, The Science Museum in London, Cité des Sciences de Paris la Villette, Melbourne Museum, New England Aquarium, Mote Marine Laboratory, the Bob Ballard Institute for Exploration, U.S. Government (NOAA National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration), Government of Canada, Government of Norway, McMaster Museum of Art, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).   

Spiegel is currently based in Norway where he designs and consults on a range of cultural projects. The Rockheim National Rock and Pop Museum in Trondheim, designed by Spiegel, has been widely praised by media and is currently nominated for European Museum of the Year. He is currently working with the McMaster Museum of Art (Canada) to design a new interactive system, called The Curiosity Engine, for exploring art objects.

In 2005 Spiegel was Co-Creative Director on the design of the Canada Pavilion for the World Expo in Japan which featured Virtual Canada – the first virtual country commissioned by a federal government.

Spiegel’s creative consulting practise includes new media consultation. He has acted as consultant to the IOC on using games in athlete education at the Youth Olympic Games, and as Director of Creative Development for an international EU-funded health research project called A2E2.

A former fellow of MIT Center for Advanced Visual Study in Boston, Spiegel became an Adjunct Professor of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto in the early 1990s and since 2007 has held a position as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Software Engineering and Game Design at McMaster University. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Mannheim in Germany, and a frequent speaker and presenter at conferences globally.
