David Penny

David Penny works with the photographic image to explore perceptions of everyday and overlooked objects. He is interested in the potential for objects to be transformed or re-imagined through their images and how they might become evocative as something other than a straight copy or document. The concept of materiality is also considered, looking at how the physical matter of a pictured object transcends its framed image space and creates meaning within the printed artefact. During his residency David will be developing a new series of images, which respond to the electrification of the train line running through Edge Hill station. His research aims to investigate the historical developments of rail technology as well as ideas of connectivity and mobility and their associated social significance.
