Jessica Akerman

Visual artist Jessica’s practice incorporates narrative drawing, collage, audiovisual installation and object-making.  During her residency Jessica will develop some work using film and performance.  She has been developing ideas with the focus on Traditional women’s work songs.  She is interested in specific types of women’s work songs: those which evolved to help women keep rhythm and synchronise activity.  This residency would enable her to make three short films of her own performances of women’s work songs (a lullaby, a walking song and a cotton workers’ clog song). These will extract the physical nature of the songs, and re-present them simply as movements and gestures.
