Karl Kolley

Karl Kolley’s work acknowledges modernism’s enduring accomplishments whilst attempting to replicate the integrity of the revolutionary spirit to invoke memories of how the future used to be. Karl’s proposal is to use the residency to develop a new collaborative audio work based on the collections of poems by William Morris called ‘Chants for Socialists’ which were distributed in newspapers and designed to be set to popular tunes and sung at socialist gatherings. The project forms part of Karl’s ‘De Stijl Life Projekt’ which he has developed to coincide with his more solitary painting practice. The project is looking at the political ideals of the Arts and Craft group along with the Dutch De Stijl and the Bauhaus schools during the machine age of the 20th Century.
