Melody Sproates is a writer and cabaret artist based in Newcastle and is a graduate from Northumbria University’s Drama and Scriptwriting programme. They make challenging and sometimes daft work to help represent the underrepresented, break binaries and to just have a bit of a dance to some bops. Melody was the winner of Live Theatre’s 2018’s New Writing award and is currently a part of The Writing Squad and Northern Stage’s NORTH company development programme.
During their residency at Metal, they will be working on their first full-length work, *gender not included, which is supported by public funds from Arts Council England at Curious Arts festival. This one-person non-binary cabaret performance will explore gender identity, self-discovery and acceptance, using Melody’s own personal experiences of growing up and trying to figure things out. A story told entirely through lip sync, Melody will use a collage of sound clips ranging from The Prodigy to Piers Morgan to answer questions like What does non-binary even mean? and Are you a boy or a girl? As well as queering all the things that make us us. This show will explain how it’s hard to navigate a trans experience in a world that doesn’t fully understand it, when you’re also trying to figure it out yourself.
*gender not included will be showcased as apart of Curious arts festival on the 2nd & 13th July 2019 at Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle.
