Saturday 10th August 2019
10am – 4pm
Metal, Chauffeurs Cottage, 1 St Peters Rd, Peterborough, PE1 1YX
Artist Hilary Powell will introduce you to the basic structures of pop-up architecture using her own pop-up book ‘Legend: An A-Z of the Lea Valley’ to highlight the possibilities of this core knowledge. This will be followed by an afternoon session exploring alternative printing techniques using photocopies and/or found materials.
Participants are invited to bring along ideas for structures they would like to try out. After constructing a series of foundation shapes to make your own pop up sketchpad you will be able to test out the possibilities of this new structural knowledge on independent projects.
This workshop is ideal for beginners. You do not need to have any prior experience of paper cutting or other moveable book formats.
About Hilary Powell
From film and book production to performance and print Hilary Powell works with overlooked processes, materials, people and places in unexpected ways.
Her recent practice involves collaborative acts of making from a public production line making a pop-up book now collected by V&A, Poetry Library and MoMA to recent experiments with ‘urban alchemy’ putting reclaimed industrial materials to use by reimagining traditional print techniques. From hidden histories to forgotten techniques, the core of her practice is imaginative salvage, placing value on the overlooked and seemingly mundane and highlighting and creating the extraordinary in the everyday.
Hilary Powell has a BfA Fine Art from the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University and an MA Scenography (Central St Martins School of Art and Design) based in The Netherlands (Utrecht Hogeschool voor de kunsten) and Prague (DAMU theatre academy). She has a PhD in Cultural Studies from Goldsmith’s College, University of London and was AHRC Fellow in the Creative and Performing Arts, Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL and Leverhulme artist/alchemist in residence with UCL Chemistry. She is now working on a Bank Job and partner in Optimistic Foundation CIC.
