If you thought embroidery was a thing of the past then think again. Jess de Wahl has quickly established her name as the ‘enfant terrible of British textile arts’. Using embroidery, she tackles subjects as wide ranging as Feminism, Misogyny & Fetishism combined with creative textile recycling in her prolific output.

Jess creates highly intricate embroideries as well as hand-sewn relief portraits from up- cycled clothing, a technique for which she has coined the term ‘Retex Sculpture’. Encouraging social change and gender equality, exploring Feminism and embracing recycling and reuse are paramount to her practice.

In this workshop Jess will talk about her practice and start you off on your own piece of Empowering Embroidery. If you are looking for fresh inspiration or want to explore and develop your embroidery skills then this is the masterclass for you. A donation of up to £7 will be required on the day to cover material costs.

Jess’s extensive body of work has been exhibited and sold internationally, featured online as well as in print and is rapidly gaining appreciation within and outside the Textile Art scene. In addition to her own practice, Jess also acts as mentor to the finalists of the prestigious Hand & Lock London Embroidery Prize and teaches her very own style of contemporary embroidery in national and international workshops.

Please note that this workshop is heavily subsidised from Jess’ normal workshop fees.
