Rivers Of The World: Public Art Competition

Opening: 18/06/20 – 16/07/20 | Free

Deadline for entries: Thursday 16th July 2020

Peterborough Young people aged 11 – 18 are being invited to create new art works inspired by the River Nene which will be displayed outside Tate Modern (London) and along the river Peterborough.

20 of the best entries will be selected and artist Jeni Cairns will combine them to create a design for a flag. The finished flag will be displayed with a series of flags in front of Tate Modern, London and along the River Nene from September to October 2020. Art works will also feature as part of a city centre exhibition later in the year.


Rivers of the World is an international art and education project led by Thames Festival Trust that connects young people around the globe to their local river through environmental, economic and cultural learning and themes. This year young people from across the UK, Morocco, Ethiopia, Sudan, Lebanon, Tanzania and India will also be making artworks which will exhibited.

How to create your art work:

  • Follow the guidance and inspiration of artist Jeni Cairns in the worksheets and films below
  • Just use white & black and shades of one colour (e.g. grey or red)
  • Art work must be square or round
  • Art works must be inspired by the River Nene; this could include the wildlife, the route the river takes, or how it is used now and in the past

Or why not explore the River Nene – take a walk, research it online or talk to people about their experiences of the River.
