PROCESSIONS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a mass participation artwork to celebrate one hundred years of votes for women being run by arts organisation Artichoke. It culminates in a huge national event on Sunday 10 June in London with thousands of women from across the UK creating a Procession to celebrate 100 years of female suffrage.
Metal are working in partnership with Artichoke, inviting women and girls from Southend of all ages to take part. Artist, Heidi Wigmore has been working with Deane’s School and Essex Girl Liberation Front to create two centenary banners that will be part of the national march on 10 June.
We are now hosting three open workshops that will help to finish off the centenary banner celebrating the Women of Essex alongside the original Suffragettes – many of whom came from Essex. Our banner will display images of Suffragettes, women from Metal’s Clever Essex project who have achieved great things in the wider world, and contemporary women who want to challenge the negative ‘Essex Girl’ stereotype.
Workshop dates and times:
Thurs 10 May – 6.30pm – 8.30pm – book your FREE place here
Thurs 17 May – 6.30pm – 8.30pm – book your FREE place here
Thurs 31 May – 6.30pm – 8.30pm – book your FREE place here
During the three workshops participants will work directly on a fabric banner to embellish the printed design with hand-made, vibrant floral motifs, adding these to the clothing, hats and hair of the women on the banner, alongside creating hand held pennants and pom poms to take with us on the march. You do not need great sewing skills – anyone can take part. Many of the original suffragette banners from the early 1900’s involved hand-finished, hand-stitched lettering and patterns which survive today as beautiful artworks as well as social, political and historical artefacts.
Venue: Metal, Chalkwell Hall, Chalkwell Park, Chalkwell Avenue, Southend on Sea SS0 8NB.

Materials will be provided but if you are a maker then do feel free to bring along your own needles, thread etc to add your own unique creation to the banner.
Everyone who takes part will be invited to take part in the huge PROCESSION of women from right across the UK, in London, on Sunday 10 June.
Workshops are all FREE and open to women and girls of any age. Please book your FREE place here.
