The Singh Twins inspire at Future Station

We were delighted to be joined by renowned artists The Singh Twins for the latest Future Station event (Wed 8th May). The twins gave a great talk about their work and career, showed their animation 'The Making of Liverpool' which was commissioned for Capital of Culture 2008 then held an open Q&A session. The twins were really inspiring and gave great advice for making a career as an artist.

'Bravo! Apart from them being massively talented I also believe them to be really important creative artists. You made me very happy to be able to enjoy them last night. Thanks.' Paul Fred Kelly

The event began with a really informative session on how to write a good press release by Angela Samata including tips from journalists. 3 Minute wonders were from Sufea Mohamad Noor, Pamela Sullivan from Arena Studios and Gallery, Visual artist D.Amos and Edward Bruce from Bridewell Studios and Gallery.
Many thanks to all who attended and participated in the event.

The next Future Station will be held on Wed 4th September and will begin with a session on applying to The Arts Council for Grants for the Arts facilitated by Metal's Artistic Director Colette Bailey. Guest speaker: TBC

Peterborough makes the national grade

Great News! Peterborough City have been successful in their bid to the Arts Council England, Creative People and Places Fund. Metal have been a close partner in the development of the project and we are really looking forward to helping achieve the cultural ambitions for the city going forward.

press release:

Vivacity Culture and Leisure are thrilled to announce that Peterborough has successfully been awarded £725,000 of funding from Arts Council England as part of a £1.2m programme.

An exciting and innovative programme has been developed by local representatives from Vivacity, Creative Peterborough, Young Lives, Step Up Community Association, Voluntary Arts and Metal. The consortium has been working on the programme and talking to local groups from across the city and it is a great boost to Peterborough to receive this award as it reflects the active support of the many local groups that have been involved over the past year.

Creative people and places is a national funding programme from Arts Council England which is designed to get more people involved in the arts. The funding, which is for 3 years, will be used to create a programme of work focused on young people, artist’s networks and collaborations and bringing new communities together to increase audiences and participation in the arts in Peterborough.

Greer Roberts, Head of Arts at Vivacity says: ‘Peterborough’s Creative people and places programme is a great opportunity for us to find ways to unlock talent, energy and creativity from across the city allowing communities and grass roots organisations to play a leading part in inspiring others to get involved with the arts’.

Jabeen Shafee, Project Manager of Step Up says ‘Step Up Community Association are extremely proud to be partners of a locally based Consortium which has successfully secured funding from The Arts Council. The grant is excellent news for our city and will undoubtedly improve the current Arts provision in Peterborough!

Step Up’s expertise in community engagement with minority communities, particularly young people provided a valuable resource for formulating the bid. We now look forward to consulting with these communities to listen to what they want to see happening in their city and bring this to fruition’.

To help The Arts Council decide which locations were eligible to apply, it took an average of the Active People data over two years (2009 and 2010) and focused on the least engaged 20 per cent. Active People is currently the most reliable national data source that measures what we are trying to change. A list of eligible locations (the lowest 20 per cent on the list) can be found on The Arts Council website.

This funding is a significant achievement, driven by local people and local organisations and Peterborough has developed an innovative programme to become part of this small number of national demonstration projects.

Helen Lax, Regional Director, East, Arts Council England, said: ‘This is a fantastic initiative and one that really matched the vision of the Creative people and places programme. Each of the three strands of activity will be informed by feedback from the community, driving local engagement from the outset and ultimately delivering a programme of activity that will invest in and invigorate arts and cultural life in Peterborough’.

The Creative people and places consortium will now work through a business planning and partnership development phase with Arts Council England and local partners in deciding the detail of the programme. From November 2013 the public will start to the benefits of this substantial grant.

On The Line

On The Line is an ambitious and unique arts project conceived by Metal, currently taking place in 22 schools along the South Essex banks of the River Thames from Thurrock to Shoeburyness. Each school is working with an artist, across a variety of artistic disciplines, to create artworks, literature and new artefacts that respond to the connection between the River Thames, the railway line and their community.

These works will be brought together to create the ON THE LINE exhibition at Metal’s Chalkwell Hall, open to the public for a month during the summer of 2013.

Exhibition Dates: Thursday 27 June - Friday 26 July 2013

Opening times: Wednesday – Sunday. 11am - 4pm. Or by appointment 01702 470700

Venue: Chalkwell Hall, Chalkwell Park, Chalkwell Avenue, Southend on Sea SS0 8NB.

Twitter updates: @MetalSouthend #ontheline

Works on display – created by hundreds of school pupils taking part, are as diverse as a radio plays; ‘discovered’ books; animation; photography; documentary style film; dance; new pieces of music as well as sea shanties and nursery rhymes. Others are exploring the area’s heritage through buildings, landscape, industry and the communities who use the River and the Railways for work and/or leisure.

Chalkwell Hall is perfectly placed for the exhibition, with its stunning views over the River Thames. The ground floor of the Hall will be completely transformed to become a temporary museum with an exhibition display designed by local Leigh artisan, Jonathan Wells.

STILL

STILL is an exhibition of new work made by artists in relation to the economics, politics, ownership and contested nature of global water supplies in the era of climate change. Water is all around us, yet increasingly we need to take steps to conserve our supplies of it. In our everyday lives, in the West, we take water for granted as a supply from the tap, a place for leisure and as a basic human right. Over the next forty years, predictions intimate that water will be as contended as oil now is in the post-industrial and developing countries.

STILL is produced by Metal and curated by Simon Poulter It has been shown in Southend on Sea, Liverpool and now comes to the City Gallery in Peterborough for its third outing.

STILL runs from 4 May to 30 June 2013 and features works by Peter Cusack, Simon Norfolk, Annette Mangaard, Paul Howard and David Matthews and a brand new commission from Markus Soukup.

Opening Hours
Tuesdays – Saturdays – 10am – 5pm
Sundays – 12noon – 4pm

Peterborough City Art Gallery
Priestgate, Peterborough, PE1 1LF
Tel: 01733 864663

Entry to the gallery is free.

Markus Soukup has been in residence at Metal’s Peterborough base – Chauffeurs Cottage – over March/April 2013, creating a new film and audio work in response to the city and in particular to the recent discovery of unique Bronze Age boats at Must Farm.

The Must Farm boats are a nationally and internationally important archaeological discovery. They have been uniquely preserved in the wetlands of the area and are the most significant find in Peterborough since the discovery of the Flag Fen Bronze Age site by Francis Pryor in 1982.

The development of STILL was supported by Essex & Suffolk Water, Arts Council England and Southend Borough Council. It is supported in Peterborough by Peterborough City Council and Vivacity.

Lantern Parade

Shamrock Park (top of Broadway)
Peterborough Museum (Priestgate)
Chauffeurs Cottage (St Peters Rd)
Culminating performance: Cathedral Square

Keep reading for opportunities to get involved as performer, participant, volunteer or audience

About the event

Bring your family and friends for an unforgettably magical journey! Brought to you by Metal, 'Upon This Rock' is a visual and musical celebration of Peterborough and its people. Spectacular lantern parades peopled by hundreds of local schoolchildren and their families will start in four corners of the city and converge on Cathedral Square, filling the city centre with light, colour and sound. The event will feature a performance of a specially commissioned score by composer Jonathan Baker, performed by local musicians and musical groups. Using music and song, a number of residents of Peterborough will tell their own stories about how they and their families came to call the city ‘home’. Taking its inspiration from the idea of ‘home’ and from the city’s history of migration, dating back through the housing schemes of the 1960’s and as far back as the celebrated bronze-age boats, the performance will embody the lives and journeys - great and small - that have led people to settle in Peterborough. Metal has pulled together an amazing artistic team to create this event including:

Artistic Director: Emma Bernard
Musical Director: Jonathan Baker
Lantern designers: Lantern Company plus local artists Stuart Payn, Jeni Cairns, Shashi Patel, Alex Lingford
Performance team includes (amongst others): Orton Wistow Primary School, Ken Stimpson Community School, Hampton College, St Thomas More RC Primary School

Opportunities to get involved:

PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS: Jonathan Baker has been commissioned to create a new musical score for the event and is seeking professional musicians to create a band at the heart of this open air event. Musicians will be required to be from Peterborough and the surrounding region and attend an audition. Those selected from the auditions will need to be available for rehearsals and the final performance over the full 3 day period from 4 – 6th September. The culminating performance will take place in the city centre from 6 – 8pm on 6th September.

Jon is particularly interested in recruiting the following musicians:
2 x trumpet
2 x trombone
2 x percussion
1 x keyboard/samplist
1 x bass/samplist
1 x guitar/percussion
1 x singer/fiddle player

Auditions will take place on the weekend of 15 and 16 June at Chauffeurs Cottage, St Peters Rd, Peterborough. Auditions will involve playing two short pieces of their choice, some relatively easy sight-reading, a short interview and involvement in a short workshop.

TELL YOUR STORY:
Are you a grandmother who has grown up in Peterborough? or
Did you or your parents move to Peterborough from another country? or
Perhaps you are a young parent with a child under the age of five?

Metal are seeking 16 ordinary people with extraordinary stories to tell, to incorporate into ‘Upon this Rock’. We are looking for people to represent the city of Peterborough, those who have a story to tell about why Peterborough is ‘home’ to them. You may simply want to tell us your story but you might also be interested in performing at the event.

To get involved drop in, have a cup of tea, meet the creative team and tell us your story:

Saturday 15th June, 11am-12 noon or 2-3pm
Sunday 16th June; 11.30am-12.30pm, 2-3pm
Venue: Chauffeurs Cottage, St Peters Rd, Peterborough, PE1 1YX

VOLUNTEER AT THE EVENT:

Metal are seeking a number of volunteers to assist at the event. This might be as parade manager, parade assistant, runners, wardrobe assistant or as event stewards. The event will be even more successful with the support of these valuable volunteers. It’s a great way to get involved in a community event, work towards accreditation or gives weight to a growing CV of experience. JOIN THE PARADE:

Each parade will have a theme. Watch this space for ideas on things to make, items to wear so that you can join in one of the parades.
