‘A small, powerful, intelligent and thought-provoking festival celebrating some of the great writing across the ages that has the sea as a central theme. Curated by acclaimed writer, poet and performer, Lemn Sissay and artist and writer, Rachel Lichtenstein. To provoke discussion, re-awaken senses, excite the adventurous spirit and discover new and classic texts about the sea.'

The day will include: artist marketplace, traditional games with a modern twist, alternative theatre, Saturday morning pictures, puppetry, digital cabaret, pop-up cafe, picnic areas and much much more...

A call for artists of all disciplines to pitch their ideas for exciting, innovative workshops and interactive games that celebrate summer in the park and encourage all ages to participate. Beautiful Chalkwell Park also has fantastic potential for site specific work/performance.

Salon Tickets on sale now!



Click on the image above to purchase tickets for the first of this year's Salon evenings at Chalkwell Hall - Friday 20 May.  Guest speaker is the acclaimed Ken Worpole, one of Britain's most influential writers on architecture and landscape.  He will be talking about his recent book 350 miles:  An Essex Journey documenting a journey into the landscape, history, coast, rivers and estuaries of Essex.  Tickets are £8 (including a light meal and drinks).

Southend at the Southbank Centre



Metal's MD, Colette Bailey has curated The Seaside Land at the Festival of Britain 60th anniversary celebration exhibition at the Southbank Centre in the heart of London.  Fourteen beach huts designed by artists with all kinds of cultural activity happening inside them, including: vintage beach wear lent by Southend's Beecroft Art Gallery; Postcards, lent by Southend Museum; an exhibition by Synchro Studios and much more will be on show on Queen's Walk until 4th September 2011.

The Seaside Land also includes the World's Longest Line of Bunting, Mark Dion's 'Mobile Gull Appreciation Unit', 'Liverpool Jackpot' by Franck Scurti and a 70m urban beach on the bank of the Thames.
