Metal have now commissioned the first four artworks, following an open competition during which we received entries from 90 artists from 7 different countries. Joel Cahen will create a series of vignettes that explore the memories of the park and encourage enquiry for people of all ages. Mark Grist and MC Mixy will work with the people of Southend to create three spoken word tours, using poetry and music. Rosie Poebright will create a new story that involves the park visitor in determining the narrative. Jamie Gledhill will make a playful augmented reality project that tells the social history of the park through talking trees.
A fifth work will be created by Matmos who will be in residence during June 2015 at Metal’s HQ in the park, Chalkwell Hall. They will create new music and audio for Chalkwell Park. They are well known for their visually stunning music gigs, live performances and use of electronic media in their work. Matmos have also worked with Bjork and many music collaborators during their career.
