Cancelling the Woodpile: Creating Unapologetically Diverse Spaces

Opening: 11/12/21 – 12/12/21 | Free

Saturday 11th (10am – midnight)

Sunday 12th December (11am – 5pm)

Pop up event and exhibition, Cancelling the Woodpile: Creating Unapologetically Diverse Spaces, created by artist in residence Jonah Batambuze, was inspired by his experiences living in England since 2007 and locally in Peterborough since 2014.

is a Ugandan-American, self-taught interdisciplinary artist and activist based in Peterborough, U.K. He was born in Chicago and spent his adolescence in the cornfields of central Illinois during the golden age of Hip-hop. Jonah’s artwork is often participatory, centres marginalised identities, and focuses on solidarity-building at the intersection of Black x Brown cultures. By highlighting shared experiences, Jonah’s uses social media, art, and rituals to inspire unity amongst diverse communities.

“When conceptualising this experience, my main goal was to expose people to more complex, diverse, and authentic stories through art, food, music, and community-centered programming. I believe creating these spaces inspires new possibilities for social cohesion and innovation that will produce the next generation of artists fighting to make a change.

We aim to make ourselves visible while asking people of all races, religions, and genders to join us for a weekend of celebration, protest, and art.”
